Since 1981, the alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary occurred to the six children on Crnica hill, after what Međugorje became an unapproved destination of Catholic pilgrimage.
Confrontations with the Yugoslav state authorities, at the time, resulted in blocking the access to what was called the Apparition Hill.
Today, this Herzegovinian place is one of the most famous Roman Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the world, with around one million Catholics visiting from all around the world.
The center of the gathering is the church of St. Jakov in the center of town.
